The Causes Of The Civil War - 1016 Words

In 1861, a Civil War broke out in the United States when the South declared their independence from the Union. There is a great amount of reasons that people can argue how the Civil War was started. However, what most people don’t understand, is that most of the events leading up to the Civil War were related to slavery. Slavery was the core of the North and South’s conflict, which led to a very vicious feud. The immediate cause of the war was slavery. Southern states, including the 11 states that formed the Confederacy, depended on slavery to support their economy. Bleeding Kansas was when the U.S. gave Kansas the right for their citizens to vote whether they wanted Kansas to be a free state or a slave state. If Bleeding Kansas never happened, Kansas would have been a free state. What happened is that Missouri’s citizens wanted Kansas to become a slave state. So, they snuck into Kansas and voted slavery for Kansas. Missouri’s citizens then went around Kansas, and killed many people that did not vote slavery. Then In 1857, Dred Scott was a Virginia slave who tried to sue for his freedom in court. The case rose to the Supreme Court, where it was said if a slave goes up to a free state which is illegal to have slaves, the slave would be free. Then came about The Scott Decision which court rules African Americans were not, nor could ever be, citizens of the United States. Congress cannot prohibit slavery and it was considered the worst Supreme Court decision in history. In 1859, the militant abolitionist John Brown seized the U.S. arsenal at Harper s Ferry, VA. He commanded anti-slavery forces and planned to end slavery by killing slave owners and freeing their slaves. Twenty-one individuals take part in the raid but John Brown is soon captured and hung. Importance of Procurement-Free-Samples for Students-Myassigment

Question: Discuss about the Importance of Procurement and logistic Strategies for Supply Chain Performance. Answer: Project Title Importance of procurement and logistic strategies for supply chain performance: A review of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation. Overview of the Research Topic Supply Chain Management (SCM), is identified as an important aspect of every organization irrespective of the size. SCM is further identified as an active management of the activities of the supply chain to maximize the value of the customer. The logistics and distribution of the materials forms an integral part of the SCM process. The improvement process in the supply performance consists of the measures for planning, controlling, designing, monitoring and execution of the supply chain activities with a motive to create net value, leveraging worldwide logistics, competitive infrastructure, and synchronization of the supply with the demand (Wilson 2017). The study is intended to focus on the important aspects of logistics and procurement and its contribution in the supply chain performance particularly for Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation. The research will be able to state on the appropriate literature associated to the topic. The proposed plan for the research will be further ab le to state the objectives and the questions associated to the research topic. The blueprint of the study will be further able to state the applicable methodology, possible outcomes and the timescale required for the final research. The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), is recognized for building first nuclear power plant in UAE and facilitating Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program in the country. The main aim of ENEC has been observed in terms of delivering a safe, clean, efficient and reliable nuclear energy in the country. It has been further able to focus on developing sustainable nuclear sector which is fully aligned with UAE energy strategy (Enec.gov.ae 2017). Research aim To know about the importance of procurement and logistic strategies for improving supply chain performance at The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) Key Research Questions The research questions have been able to depict the purpose for the report. Some of the important objective expressed with research questions are listed below as follows: What are the SCM strategies followed at ENEC and how has it been able to add value to the organization? What are the logistics and procurement strategies followed at ENEC and how has it been able to add value to the performance of supply chain? What is the importance of procurement and logistic strategies for improving supply chain performance at ENEC? What the key areas of improvement which can be made in procurement and logistics to improve the supply chain management at ENEC? Literature Review Procurement Strategy Procurement is defined as the acquisition of the supplies, materials which is required by an organization to operate successfully. Procurement strategy refers to the planned approach for maintaining a cost effective purchase plan required by the supplies of a company. Procurement strategy is identified as a method to purchase the items from external suppliers. It has been further observed that the procurement strategy involved some of the main process such as managing the order, review, receipt and approval of the same from the suppliers. Some of the main tasks involved in the procurement strategy involve development of the quality standards, financing the purchases, price negotiation, buying goods, inventory control and disposal of the wastes like packaging. In development of a successful procurement strategy it is important to source and assess the details of the work. Some of the main details involve using the objectives, existing resources, timeline and the budget for the impleme ntation of the procurement strategy (Jacobs and Chase 2013). A good process to implement the procurement strategy has been discerned with the main rationale of purchasing the equipment. The procurement process has been further identified as the main process is associated to the supplier relationship and ensuring the high level of service is delivered to the user. This is identified as a critical job in the SCM as it helps in getting the service what has been paid for. The implementation process of the procurement management has been mainly identified with ensuring that the issue in the network chain is resolved as quickly as possible. The implementation of the procurement plan has been further observed with ensuring maximum value is received from the supplier relationship (Heizer 2016). The ENEC has a dedicated ENEC suppler portal through which the supplier can directly interact with the matters concerning registration, profile updates, prequalification, invoice and tenders. ENEC gives the opportunity for other companies to enroll themselves in facilitating procurement solution for the upcoming opportunities (Enec.gov.ae. 2017). Logistic strategy Logistics strategy is set on the various types of the guiding principles which are observed to be based on the plans, policies and coordination of the goals of a business. The logistics strategy is not recognized to be confined to the decisions associated to the tactical decisions about transportation and warehousing. The long-term decisions are required to put in place the capabilities of the logistics in supporting product of a company in the market place (Hajiesmaeili 2016). When a particular company is involved in implementing a logistics strategy it is regarded as defining the service levels at a most cost effective manner. As the supply chain is constantly changing in nature, every company dealing in products may develop a number of strategies for a particular product type, specific country and specific customers. The development of the logistics involves improvement in the four distinct levels namely strategic, structural, and functional and implementation. In general logistic s strategy should be able to review in what aspect the logistics contributes to those high-level objectives. The structural issue considers the number of warehouses and distribution centers which should to be allotted to a particular manufacturing plant. The functional strategy is useful in separating each separate function in the logistics of the organization in order to achieve functional excellence. The implementation plan includes the procedure for the development and the configuration of the procedures for the development of the management plan for bringing about the change. Some of the important considerations made to build the logistics strategy include transportation, outsourcing, logistics system, competitors, information and strategy review (Li and Luo 2016). ENEC has been able to implement the logistics strategy by keeping the services at a high level despite of the changes which are in the supply chain. The main goal of the formal logistics is in making sure that the company is able to deliver the appropriate strategy to the customers. In addition to this ENEC is observed to review its logistics strategy from time to time and adapt as the priorities of the supply chain change (Iaea.org. 2017). Supply Chain Performance Management Performance Management in SCM is depicted as the final stage in the supply chain management which is recognized to be in isolation as the monitoring process, which often occurs concurrently with all the other elements in the cycle of supply chain. This particular process is observed to consist of the retrospective analysis to determine whether appropriate process was followed along with the desired outcomes. It is important to develop effective SCM performance and ensure the implementation of the same in accordance with the departmental policies and procedures which are applicable to the various types of the legislative requirements. The SCM performance management takes into consideration suppliers of the goods and services, Service Delivery Realisation and or Value for money and SCM as an overall unit. The monitoring of the suppliers has taken into consideration the database of contracts awarded, Documenting non-performance by the supplier or review of the relationship with supplier s and the improvements (Western Cape Government. 2017). Any company active in the manufacturing industry is dependent on the effectiveness of the supply chain. Henceforth, it is not required to optimize the internal production process. A company will be only able to meet the customers expectation to meet the specific requirement such as the short delivery times and strict compliance with the deadlines. In case a logistics management needs to function in the correct procedure it is important to convey the requirement messages. Some of the main benefits from the supply chain event management with being informed about important developments and are notified automatically about imminent bottlenecks. Based on the timely notifications on the material planning the transportation process will be able to gain time for responding to the impeding shortages at an early stage. The shortage in the supply costs involve extra trips which are avoided (Monczka et al. 2015). Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation Supply Chain Strategy The nuclear energy industry has to implement some of the most stringent quality standard in the world. This has been further able to support the local companies; the ENEC has been further able to work with the local companies to upgrade the systems to become American society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Nuclear component certified by the companies. The company has further taken several steps to become nuclear approved suppliers. The company has been further able to support UAE companies to raise the quality standard to raise the quality standard in the supply chain and to meet the various types of the requirement in the nuclear industry (Enec.gov.ae. 2017). This has been further able to allow for the Emirati companies for the opportunity to contribute to the success of the ENEC program and gain popularity along with a unique advantage in providing nuclear quality services and materials to the world. To the present date it has more than 1400 UAE companies has been able to secure con tracts amounting to more than US $ 3 Billion for a range of the services and the products to support for the construction of the UAEs first energy plants (Enec.gov.ae. 2017). Some of the various types of the other initiatives taken by the company have been further seen with facilitating the development of a local nuclear energy supply chain. ENEC and KEPCO holds regular supplier forum to make sure that the local company is able to inform on the upcoming opportunities and the steps which are required to register for tendering about the process for the Barakah projects. Some of the other initiatives taken by the company have the initiation of the procurement services for the suppliers (Enec.gov.ae. 2017). Methodology Research Philosophy The main form of the research philosophy with the positivists theory. This is due to the fact that the research will consider the reality is stable and same will be described in the objective viewpoint. Hence, the study will not interfere with the phenomena of the research study. Research Design The main form of the research design will be identified in terms of application of descriptive design. The research will be able to provide the relevant answer to the questions of who, what, when, where, and how. The research will not only be able to ascertain the quantitative aspect but also able to focus on the general aspects which will be a pre-cursor to the quantitative analysis. The main intention of the research will be to obtain the information related to the current status of the phenomenon and to describe what exists to a certain situation or variable (Libguides.usc.edu. 2017). Research approach The research will follow a deductive approach as it will be mainly based on the hypothesis and the quantitative aspect. As the research philosophy will be based on positivist paradigm, quantitative research will be most suitable. It has been further identified that the deductive approach of the research will be able to best serve the purpose of the research (Gabriel 2013). The research will involve collection and conversion of data into numeric values in order to draw conclusion from the statistical analysis. The quantitative analysis will focus on the research hypothesis and able to establish possible relationship with the investigated variables. The collected will follow a strict procedure to be prepared for the statistical analysis for the research (Alzheimer-europe.org. 2017). Data Collection method As the data collection will be based on quantitative data collection method, the process for the collection of the data will be based on primary data. This objective will be achieved by conducting a survey through formulation of a questionnaire. The questionnaire will be a web based questionnaires which will be distributed via mails. The first portion of the questionnaire will consist of some of the general and demographic questions such as Name, Age, Place of Origin and position held in Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation. The main question will include the relevant question which will be able to focus on the success logistics and procurement strategies in the supply chain management of the organization. The data evaluation based on the questionnaire will be evaluated on the basis of a rating scale which will be plotted in MS Excel for quantitative data analysis. As the research will comprise of quantitative data collection methods, it will depend on simple random sampling and struc tured data collection which will fit to the diverse experience of predetermined response (Best and Kahn 2014). Sample Size The sample selected for the evaluation shall include both the employees and managers working at ENEC. The total sample size will be 200 respondents, among which 150 will employees and 50 will be managers. The research sample size will be important empirical aspects of the study which will be able ensure the reliability of the research (Oreilly and Parker 2013). Research strategy and technique Hence the overall research technique will involve surveys linked to the research objectives. It has been further identified that the research will be able to deduce the results from the hypothesis by incorporating quantitative research techniques. The data collection process for the research will be further based on the quantitative data collection method as it will be able to best serve the purpose of the study (Scientificpapers.org. 2017). Outcomes The outcomes of the research will be based on the main statistical techniques used in the research. It has been discerned that the most suitable statistical measure to evaluate the data from the rating scale will be application of descriptive statistics. Henceforth, the results from the central tendency will be based on the computation of Mean, Median and Mode. In order to compute the dispersion in the data in a more accurate manner standard deviation will be able to find the relevant distance among the each value and the mean of the data (Nuttin 2014). Timescale The timeline/timescale is able to show the relevant sequence for the activities which will be performed for the conduction of the entire research in the next three years starting from September 2017. He teaches them to be victors ; he will non accept anything but the best. I believe that the best manner to avoid hurts is to be in form and usage common sense. There are many factors that could do hurt on a baseball diamond. The best manner to do our occupation as trainers easier is to forestall these hurts. The best manner to forestall hurt is to do certain that all the equipment is put on the side and non on the center of the field, where person traveling for a foul does non trip over a baseball or a helmet. I do non believe jocks truly think in such footings until person really gets hurt. One thing that I ever kept my oculus on when I was working was to do certainly the backstop # 8217 ; s were have oning their face mask when they were warming the hurlers in the bullpen. At first, the jocks thought I was stating them to set their mask on as an important figure ; nevertheless, after I explained to them it was for their ain good, and I was merely looking out for their safety, they realized why I was making it. I believe one manner to acquire the regard of the jocks and managers on a squad is to allow them see you care about them, and you as the trainer attention about them winning. Warming and chilling down earlier and after pattern is another good manner to forestall hurt. Warming up by running and so stretching will assist forestall hurt. Light ramble oning gets the blood supply fluxing and will heighten the stretch. I believe it besides gets the jock ready to execute. Stretching will besides promote flexibleness, a large factor with being # 8220 ; in shape. # 8221 ; The cool down period is besides of import in doing certain the athlete corsets in form aerobically. This will maximise the pattern. I ever made certain the jocks did all the Ir running before they received their ice. I found out the N.C.A.A. truly did non enforce a batch of safety factors for baseball. The lone thing harmonizing to Kevin Smoot the lone safety bar methods the N.C.A.A. authorizations are the hitter to have on a helmet and the backstop wear a mask and the protective equipment. The large thing that suprized me is the participants are non mandated to have on a protective cup. Any participant in their right head would have on one, but sometimes you get one or two jocks that are non excessively bright. One major thing that I saw and heard hurlers use to assist forestall shoulder hurt is the offseason shoulder exercise plan. It has been over twenty old ages since a hurler with no old hurt and who has candidly done the exercise miss a start in the rotary motion to shoulder hurt. The shoulder plan was one of the biggest things that impressed me. I will do certain before I leave C.M.U. I have a transcript of the plan and do certain my jocks usage it. If we as trainers can forestall shoulder hurts we can travel a long manner as baseball trainers. Shoulder hurts are the biggest job for throwing jocks. If the shoulder job does non acquire taken attention of the hurt could travel down to the cubitus and maintain move on down and could perchance stop a jocks calling. I genuinely enjoyed working with baseball. Baseball was decidedly a measure up from working with Women # 8217 ; s hoops. After go forthing baseball I felt as if I was associated with a group of victors that played to win sometimes I wondered about that sometimes working hoops. I worked with fourgoodstudent trainers, three fellow 283 # 8217 ; s, and a ATC that I learned a lotform. I do non believe I could of been any luckier. It was genuinely a blast. Mentions 1. ENERGY CONSERVATION Essays - State Functions, Heat Transfer

ENERGY CONSERVATION Essays - State Functions, Heat Transfer ENERGY CONSERVATION 1. How does the final temperature compare with the initial temperature of the hot and cold water for trial? The final temperature goes between the temperature of the hot and cold water. If the amount of the cold water is more then the amount of the hot water, then the final temperature will be closer to the temperature of cold water. If the amount of the hot water is more then the amount of the cold water, then the final temperature will be closer to the temperature of the hot water. 2. How does the energy lost by the hot water compare with the energy gained by the cold water? The energy lost by the hot water and the energy gained by the cold water are very close amounts if they both are same mass. If the amount of hot water is more then the mass of the cold water, the energy gained by the cold water will be more then the energy lost by the hot water. If the amount of cold water is more then the mass of the hot water, the energy lost by the hot water will be more then the energy gained by the cold water. 3. What happens to the amount of heat transferred as the amount of water is changed? I know that the amount of water can effect the amount of heat transferred. The amount of heat transferred increases when the amount of water increases. 4. Does your data ( energy difference ) support the law of energy? If not, why? Yes, my data support the law of energy. Conclusion What happens to hot and cold objects when they are brought together? The hot objects will lose energy and the cold object will gain energy from the hot objects. The temperature of the hot objects will go down and the temperature of the cold objects will go up when they are brought together. The final temperature will be between the temperatures of hot and cold objects.

Quick Response Logistics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Quick Response Logistics - Essay Example First and foremost, the retailer can use this strategy to carry out research about customer needs and respond to their requirements. Having captured the customer requirements, the retailers can then design and manufacture the designer fashion within reasonable time and at relatively low cost. By adopting this, strategy, the retailer stands better chances of winning business since it will be operating effectively and efficiently at low cost. The returns are likely to be high for the company. As illustrated in the case of Zara, the concept of quick response logistics has significantly helped the company to gain a competitive advantage over the other rival competitors. The company operates very low inventory and it makes deliveries of the products to different retailers at least twice a week. The other notable aspect about the company is that it takes only four to five weeks to design a new collection and then about a week to manufacture it whereas other competitors will take almost double the time to do the same. This helps the company to be in a position to respond to the needs of the customers in time and the strategy also helps the company to cut costs in its

Crunch Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Crunch - Assignment Example Crunch’s demographic market was that of young adults. Their core demographic market rested in American sub-urbans. These were people who would be in their twenty somethings. Thus the demographic market of Crunch is young and peppy. Crunch stood out as a brand for its innovative offerings. They always tried to project a big image of their company. The Crunch logo symbolized fitness apparel manufacturers and they had that logo licensed. A point came during its tenure, when aerobics was no longer central to the company’s programs. Crunch continued to gain popularity and attention by coming up with group exercise concepts that were not available. Levine’s motivation and strengths: Levine drew his motivation from the positive results that he was getting for the work that he was doing. His investments into new and innovative products were being welcomed in the market. His biggest strength was his urge to take risk and try new things. This had helped him project an ecle ctic image of his company as it helped ensure that the company was always on the road to development and innovation, the key traits needed for a successful stint in entrepreneurship. What are their main operational concerns? How have they financed their growth? Crunch as a brand was larger than life. They had gone for above the line promotion and had ensured that no stones were left turned in promoting it properly. They had a TV show running in its name and they had people licensing the product and selling as if it would not be available. However there was no corporate organization and everything rested at the club level. Crunch’s staff was at the club level only and most of its employees stayed in Manhattan club. There was heavy dependence on external accounting firms, PR agencies, consultants and advertising agencies. However now that crunch was considering to expand foray into bigger ventures, Levine was considering preparing a systematic mode of corporate organization. Is the Sports Life acquisition a good fit for Crunch? Yes, it’s a good fit for Crunch because it is in sync with the overall branding of Crunch. It will not just add another big name to their pool but will also be monumental in promoting the image of Crunch as a brand. It will attract more customers and is also likely to take Crunch to newer and bigger heights. SportsLife will mean Crunch will have a whole new market base added to his customer base. Those gyms are Olympic sizes, they are huge and widely revered by the people of Atlanta. There were membership installment plans that were being offered to the customers of Sports Life. While acquiring SportsLife would mean drifting away a bit from the Crunch’s typical business model what could be done could be to acquire it and then customize it according to Crunch’s branding itself and the needs and perception of people of Atlanta. Q. How should Crunch prioritize their growth opportunities? I believe that Crunch shou ld go for a carefully thought out growth expansion program. They should go for an online portal, first. It is important for faster and acquiring access of their customers to them. It will also give them a access and make them able to capitalize on the market on web. Secondly, it should opt for acquiring Sports Life and once it has big large enough at home then it should look out for international expansion and spreading into

Effect of Surface Area on Reaction Rate

Effect of Surface Area on Reaction Rate Surface Area vs. Reaction Rate How does the surface area of pure cane sugar cubes affect the rate of dissolution in water? Chandler Hultine Abstract The purpose of this lab was to investigate how surface area affects the reaction rate of a substance in a solution. This lab was put together to find out how differentiating surface areas of pure cane sugar cubes would affect the rate of dissolution in water. The investigation was undertaken by using five different groups of sugar cubes, each group having a different surface area than the others. The cubes were submerged and stirred in a solution of water until they completely dissolved, and the time it that it took them each to dissolve was recorded. The longer the time it took for the cubes to dissolve, the slower the reaction rate, and vice versa. The initial hypothesis, if the surface area of the cube increases, then the reaction rate of the dissolution of the cube in water will also increase because more of the cube will be exposed to the water which will allow for more collisions of particles to occur at a time, was accepted due to a positive correlation between dissolution times and surface area of cubes. The more broken up a cube was, the faster it tended to dissolve in water and vice versa, because the more broken up cubes had more surface area. (Abstract Words: 212) Introduction The overall aim of this lab is to investigate how surface area is related to reaction rate in terms of the dissolution rate of a substance in a solution. This lab will be experimenting with sugar cubes of the same volume, but different surface areas to see how exactly surface area affects the rate of dissolution. How does the surface area of pure cane sugar cubes affect the rate of dissolution in water? If the surface area of the cube increases, then the reaction rate of the dissolution of the cube in water will also increase because more of the cube will be exposed to the water which will allow for more collisions of particles to occur at a time.3,6 With most things in life, size is a very important factor that people consider in many choices they make, whether it be deciding between the newest smartphones or burning wood chips versus entire logs in a fire.1 Seeing how size affects something is key when taking an item/idea and making it more effective. The purpose of this experiment is to see how the amount of surface area of a substance is related to the reaction rate when said substance is placed into a solution.5 This investigation is to see how the reaction rate of a substance can be either increased or decreased when placed into a solution. Investigation For the investigation, a variety of sources that related to how surface and dissolution/reaction rates are related. The [main] sources include but are not limited to: Research on the topic done by NASA, An excerpt from Ansel’s Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms and Drug Delivery Systems, And experiment research from sciencebuddies.org titled Big Pieces or Small Pieces: Which React Faster?. These sources have provided a great amount of background information, especially the article by NASA involving an explanation on the correlation between surface areas and reaction rates. Materials In order to complete this experiment, the following materials were required: 25 Sugar cubes (any brand, just make sure all the same) 1 Timer 5 Beakers (250mL) 1 Pipet 1 Thermometer 1 Knife 1 Paper towel or piece of paper (cut sugar cubes on) 1 Hammer or weighted object (to crush one of the sugar cubes into a powder like state) 1 Pencil and paper (to record observations) 1 Stirring device of any kind (like a chopstick) Constants Water source, brand of beakers, size of beakers, amount of water, stirring device, type of sugar cube, temperature of water, temperature of surroundings, temperature of beakers, cuts in sugar cubes, pipets, timer, thermometer Procedure Divide the 25 sugar cubes into groups of five so that each group has five sugar cubes. Leave the first group untouched. This will be the group that has the smallest surface area. Take the second group of five sugar cubes and, using the knife, cut each cube in half. Take the third group of sugar cubes and cut each cube into quarters (cut each one in half then cut the halves in half). The fourth group will be cut into eighths. The last group of sugar cubes will be completely ground up into a powder. This will be the group with the greatest surface area. Once all the cubes are cut up and put into groups, fill up each of the 5 beakers with water to the 200mL mark. Use a pipet to make the measurement precise. Wait 30 minutes after filling the beakers with water to ensure they are all room temperature. Begin with the uncut sugar cube. With the timer and stirring device at hand, place the uncut cube into the water-filled beaker and begin the timer and stirring as soon as the sugar cube is placed in the water. Stir the sugar cube in the water until it completely dissolves/disappears in the water. Stop the timer as soon as the sugar cube completely dissolves. Record the results on a pre-made data table. Repeat steps 6 to 9 for all variants of the sugar cube for one group. Repeat the entire experiment for all 5 groups of sugar cubes, making sure that one group is finished before moving onto another group. DO NOT finish dissolving all of the sugar cubes of one specific surface area size and then moving onto another set of the same surface area sized cubes; make sure the experiment is carried out group by group. Treat each group with the five different surface area sized sugar cubes as an individual experiment. This way a total of 5 experiments will be carried out. Data Trial 1 Size of Sugar Cube Time (seconds) for dissolution Full 412 Half 217 Quarter 123 Eighth 82 Powder 51 Trial 2 Size of Sugar Cube Time (seconds) for dissolution Full 401 Half 202 Quarter 150 Eighth 77 Powder 58 Trial 3 Size of Sugar Cube Time (seconds) for dissolution Full 426 Half 236 Quarter 120 Eighth 68 Powder 47 Trial 4 Size of Sugar Cube Time (seconds) for dissolution Full 455 Half 241 Quarter 117 Eighth 81 Powder 55 Trial 5 Size of Sugar Cube Time (seconds) for dissolution Full 423 Half 221 Quarter 136 Eighth 71 Powder 52 Mean time for full sugar cube: 423.4 Mean time for half sugar cube: 223.4 Mean time for quarter sugar cube: 129.2 Mean time for eighth sugar cube: 75.8 Mean time for powder sugar cube: 52.6 Results and Discussion The results of this experiment show that a more broken up sugar cube resulted in a faster dissolution rate of the cube in water, and vice versa when there were longer rates of dissolution for sugar cubes that were less broken up. Since the purpose of this experiment was to find the relationship between surface area and reaction rate, this experiment was successful. Trial 1 data shows the times nearly being cut in half as the sugar cube becomes more crushed up, except for the transition between the powder and sugar cube broken up into eighths. Trial 2 data also shows the time between each tier of sugar cubes being split in half as the surface area increases. However, this is not true for the half-broken up and quarter-broken up sugar cubes. The time in seconds for dissolution rate for those two sugar cubes only had a difference of ~50 seconds, which is not even close to half. This makes me wonder what happened during that part of the lab, because the data does not follow the conventional trend like the rest of my experiment results. A possible source of error for this trial was that I did not collect all of the sugar from the sugar cube after it was cut. When all of the sugar is not completely collected, the data can become skewed because not all of the sugar cube is actually being dissolved in the solution. Trials 3, 4, and 5 all show around the similar results. The times are very close to each other for each size sugar cube that was dissolved. Trials 3, 4, and 5 are also relatively close to the data shown in trial 1. This shows that there was a little less precision that went into trial 2. What does all of this data mean? Well for starters, the data and experiment are relevant for any other experiment out there that tries to determine the relation between surface area and reaction rate. The reason for this is because whenever different rates of reaction are being tested for, a change in the surface area of a reactant/variable will have an effect on the rate of reaction, because the alteration of surface area means that the frequency of particle collisions is altered as well.1,3,7 For example, if the surface area (of an object that is about to be placed in a solution) is doubled, that means there will be twice as much area for particles to potentially interact with on the object as compared to the original object that has the original surface area.3 This is true for all aspects of reaction rate; surface area plays a substantial role whenever reaction rate is tested for.1,3 Conclusion Initial Hypothesis: If the surface area of the cube increases, then the reaction rate of the dissolution of the cube in water will also increase because more of the cube will be exposed to the water which will allow for more reaction between water and sugar cube to occur at one time.3,6 There was a strong, positive correlation between the data that was collected and the initial hypothesis. From looking at the data, it is apparent that the cubes that were more broken up that had more surface area dissolved much faster than a cube that was less broken up and did not have as much surface area. The data shows that more surface area does mean faster reaction rate, and vice versa.3 The powder/completely crushed up sugar cube had the quickest time for dissolution in water which was on average 52.6 seconds, whereas the full sugar cube that was untouched and had the smallest amount of surface area had the slowest time for dissolution which was on average 423.4 seconds. Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted with the support of the data. The larger cubes that were not cut up took the longest to completely dissolve, whereas the finely crushed up cubes dissolved quickest.5 The accuracy of this experiment could be slightly improved in the future by adapting a more consistent and reliable method of stirring the sugar cubes around when they are placed in water. This would improve the accuracy of the time that each cube takes to completely dissolve in the solution of water. Bibliography Reaction Rates. Publication. NASA, n.d. Rehabilitation, Not Capital Punishment Essay -- Argumentative Persuasi

Rehabilitation, Not Capital Punishment The death penalty is the punishment used in 38 states, and many other countries, as a way of disposing the people in society who are mentally or emotionally disturbed, love their families very much, have a bad temper, or just plain made a mistake. These reasons account for many homicides that take place each year. Capitol Punishment is just not humane and should not be legal. The argument most often used to support the death penalty in former-Soviet republics is the necessity of having a particularly efficacious deterrent against murders and other common crimes. However, none of the many studies about the matter have been able to show that death penalty is more of a deterrent than other punishments. It's completely wrong to think that most of those who commit serious crimes such as murders consider the consequences of their actions. Murders are often committed when the criminal is blinded with passion, when emotions prevail over reason. They are sometimes committed under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or in panic moments, when the culprit is discovered while he steals, as I mentioned already. Some murderers have very serious psychiatric problems or are mental patients. In none of these cases is it possible that the fear to be sentenced to death could act as an effective deterrent. There is another heavy limit. One who plans a crime rationally can choose to go on, although he knows the risk he's running, thinking that he won't be discovered. Most of the criminologists assert that the best way to ... ...cases. There was many times in my own childhood where I took the last cupcake, or spilled my milk. Not all of these times was I held accountable for my misdeed. The younger brother usually received the punishment that I deserved. This can also happen with murder, only death is permanent and "time out" is not. What do we say to the families of the innocently punished when such evidence comes forward to prove that their loved one was wrongly executed? There is nothing we can do or say to excuse ourselves. In conclusion, the death penalty is not right because it does not serve the purposes that it is intended to serve. I have proved that it is not an effective deterrent, but it also removes people from the world who can be rehabilitated in a proper institution.

Adventure Stories in Children?S Literature

Adventure is an important part of children's psyche. Children often dream of strange fortunes, great feats, exciting events, long trips, and everything they can be drawn to from the monotony of everyday life. Heroes of adventure stories are mostly sailors, pirates, cowboys and Indians, convicts, researchers, adventurers and solitaires of all types. The concept of adventure story is quite simple: brave, strong and resourceful hero must make a difficult task, and overcome a lot of danger, but in the end, he wins. The most important features of adventure stories are a romantic setting, an unusual situation, and the special vitality of characters. The beginnings of adventure genre are found in Homer? s Odyssey, Cervantes? s Don Quijote, biblical motifs and medieval novels. Europeans and North Americans were having many real-life adventures in the nineteenth century: explorers were seeking the North Pole, Florence Nightingale was pioneering for female independence as a director of nursing in the Crimean War, and a railroad was being constructed across the United States. If a person could not go to a remote region and overcome the perils lurking there, the best next adventure was the vicarious one offered through books. (Norton, Donna: 59). The most popular writers of children's adventure novels are Daniel Defoe, Jonathan Swift, Robert Louis Stevenson, Mark Twain, J. F. Cooper, Zane Grey, Karl May, Howard Pyle, Jules Verne etc. I will introduce you to the most famous writers of adventure stories in children? s literature. Daniel Defoe Daniel Defoe was born in 1660 in London, to James and Alice Foe. His father worked as a butcher and the young Daniel regretted the fact that he could not attend a prestigious school, such as Oxford or Cambridge. Defoe tried his best to be a gentleman, even changing his name from Foe to Defoe. As a result of his controversial writings, Defoe was arrested, imprisoned for a period of time, tried, and sentenced to pay a fine and to stand three times in the pillory. His novel Robinson Crusoe was published in 1719. The story is about a young man who strongly desires to become a sailor. In spite of his family's opposition, he runs away to go to sea. His adventures lead him all over the world, but his most important journey is a spiritual one. The novel is basically about the life and adventures of Crusoe on the island, where he arrived after a shipwreck. A series of disasters happen to him as punishment for his rebellious nature. For example he was forced to spend twenty-eight years of his life on that deserted island. On the island, Crusoe is transformed. As he searches for peace, he must come to grips with his relationship to God. When he finally acknowledges his own Christianity, all the rebelliousness is driven out of him and he begins to live a peaceful existence on the island. This book was inspired by the true story of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor. Robert Louis Stevenson admired it, saying that the footprint scene in Crusoe was one of the greatest in English literature, and most unforgettable: â€Å"One day, about noon, going towards my boat, I was exceedingly surprised with the print of a man's naked foot on the shore, which was very plain to be seen on the sand. This scene was a prelude to his meeting with Friday, one of the savages, whom Crusoe rescues from his captors. Crusoe â€Å"civilizes† Friday and converts him to Christianity. Friday remains faithful to Crusoe until the end. It is not known how Defoe, living in London, came to know enough to write a story about ships, sailing, pirates, and savages. No matter the sources for Robinson Crusoe, it is definitely an entertaining and re alistic adventure tale. Although not written for children, this book was extremely popular with them. It has inspired a new genre, the Robinsonade as works like The Swiss Family Robinson (1812) by Johann David Wyss. Jonathan Swift Jonathan Swift was born in 1667 in Dublin, Ireland. Not only he had been involved in some of the most important and heated political events of the time, but he was also a well-known political journalist and satirist whose style was, to say the least, distinctive. He wrote a masterpiece named Gulliver? s Travels (1726). It is a tale of a surgeon Lemuel Gulliver as he voyages to the strange lands. As you follow Gulliver through four traumatic voyages, you are exposed to a host of creatures and situations and systems of their devising. The book consists of four parts where the stories of Gulliver's experiences among dwarfs and giants are best known. It was written as a satire, but it was read by children for its humor and adventure. Allegory is one of Swift's most important satirical tools which means that characters, situations, and places have a significance that goes beyond simply what they are in themselves. It shows Jonathan's desire to encourage people to read deeper and not take things for granted. Since in this book he wrote about certain political figures, he published the book anonymously. He could never have actually named real names in his novel. It didn't take long for people to catch on to the fact that the author was writing about England. And it also didn't take long for the public to discover that the author was Jonathan Swift. Swift's satire is designed to keep you an independent reader, the characters are meant to stimulate you, not to lead you. Swift's aim in this book is for you to come to terms with your ideas on some important questions regarding humanity and to be aware of the factors that influence your beliefs. The novel is written in the form of a travel book. Swift chose this device because travel tends to change our perspective on the world around us. As Gulliver voyages, and we voyage with him, his (and our) viewpoint changes according to the place(s) in which he finds himself and the things that happen to him there. Robert Louis Stevenson Stevenson was born in 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He suffered from tuberculosis and often travelled abroad in search for a healthy climate. His childish mind was greatly developed by his nurse and her stories of ghosts and fairies. Christened as ‘Robert Lewis Balfour', at the age of 18 he dropped the name Balfour and changed his middle name from Lewis to Louis. His first major sucess was Treasure Island (1883). The story is set in the mid-18 century and owes a little in style to Robinson Crusoe. This story had an interesting beginning. While trying to entertain his stepson, Stevenson drew a watercolor map of an island, then followed his drawing with the now famous story of pirates, buried treasure, and a young boy? s adventures. (Norton, Donna: 60). After the mysterious death of the old sailor, the main character Jim Hawkins finds a map of the island with hidden treasure. He wanted to see if it was a true treasure map so he got a crew and they set sail. On their way to the island, Hawkins and his friends will be confronted with the pirates who want the treasure for themselves. Treasure Island is an exciting adventure story, filled with morals that need to be incubated into a growing child. The author narrates these through the protagonist, Jim Hawkins, who is an immature, naturally curious and adventurous young boy. Stevenson? s other famous work is Kidnapped (1886). David Balfour is the protagonist of the book. At the age of sixteen, he is an orphan with youthful dreams that are interrupted by his wicked uncle. He has David kidnapped, hoping to have him sent to America and sold as a slave so he can be the sole inheritor of his nephew? s fortune. The main theme of Kidnapped is good conquers evil. It is both an adventure story and a historical novel. David Balfour's adventures created enough thrill, excitement, and suspense to become a children's classic almost immediately. It is also valued as a novel that relates the history of Scotland in the 18th century. Stevenson never intended to be a writer of adventure stories, but with Treasure Island and Kidnapped he brought that genre to the peak of its achievement in the 19th century and inspired many later writers. His influence can be seen in such diverse works as James Matthew Barrie? s Peter Pan. Mark Twain Mark Twain was born as Samuel Clemens in 1835 in Florida, Missouri. After the beginning of the Civil War he became a reporter, starting to use the pseudonym Mark Twain. He was the greatest American writer of realistic adventure. Twain grew up in the river town of Hannibal, Missouri, where he lived many of the adventures about which he later wrote. His humorous tales of human nature, especially The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), remain standard texts in high school and college literature classes. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a fun-filled adventure story, where the author looks at life through the eyes of boys approaching their teenage years. Through them, Twain reveals that life is an adventure – filled with fun, romance, surprises, humor, sorrow, and fear. Growing up along the Mississippi River, Tom and his best friend Huck play hooky, pull pranks, and even run away to become pirates. The boys are not presented in a romantic manner; instead, they reflect the realities of life. Twain once said that he began writing Tom Sawyer as the recollections of his boyhood memories, and the characters in the book are based upon real people from the author’s childhood. This is much more than a children’s book; it is truly a timeless, classic about childhood that is simply set in an earlier, more peaceful and idyllic time. In the same year (1876) when The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was published, Twain began its sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which he called â€Å"another boy’s book. † Huck Finn, a boy of about 12 years, is the son of the town drunk. Widow Douglas adopts him so that she can civilize him and raise him to be a gentleman. Although she is kind and attentive, he is uncomfortable and feels stifled at her house. He does not like going to school, attending church, or wearing neat clothes. Huck must make a difficult decision about whether or not to turn in Jim, a runaway slave, who becomes a friend to him. The novel has a more serious tone than The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, for it deals with social issues like racial prejudice and slavery. This book has been repeatedly restricted in American high scools for its frequent use of the word  «nigger », which was a common term when the book was written. Twain was a master in using colloquial speech and helped to create distinctive American literature built on American themes and language. The Prince and the Pauper (1882) is a story of two boys born on the same day who are physically identical. The story is set in the 16th century, England, under the reign of the autocratic ruler, Henry VIII. During this period, the rich lived in the lap of luxury, while the poor struggled to survive. Edward Tudor, Prince of Wales and son of Henry VIII, lives in the palace, while Tom Canty, a beggar and the son of the drunkard, John Canty, lives in poverty. Through a chance encounter, the two boys exchange roles and experience life as the other. The Prince and the Pauper is a children's adventure tale, since it is narrated in a simple style. but it also contains the elements of social criticism. Conclusion Adventure is something that comes out of the frame of everyday life. Adventure stories in children? s literature are filled with strange journeys, shipwrecks, pirates, looking for the hidden treasure, life on a deserted island etc. Frequency of travel corresponds to children's wishes and their psychology, because children love to travel. All the above-mentioned writers were a little bit strange: they changed their names and were extremely introverted. Society did not understand them. On the basis of their uniqueness, they wrote their most famous pieces. References 1. Norton, Donna. Through the Eyes of a Child: An Introduction to Children? s Literature. 2. Fireflies, Family Lampyridae

Fireflies, Family Lampyridae Who hasn’t chased a blinking firefly on a warm summer night? As children, we captured their luminescence in glass jars to make insect lanterns. Unfortunately, these beacons of childhood seem to be disappearing due to habitat loss and the interference of manmade lights. Fireflies, or lightning bugs as some call them, belong to the family Lampyridae. Description: Fireflies are usually black or brown, with elongate bodies. If you handle one, youll notice they feel somewhat soft, unlike many other kinds of beetles. Hold it gently, as its quite easy to squish. When viewed from above, the Lampyrids seem to conceal their heads with a large shield. This feature, an extended pronotum, characterizes the firefly family. If you examine the underside of a firefly, you should find the first abdominal segment is complete (undivided by the hind legs, unlike in ground beetles). In most, but not all fireflies, the last two or three abdominal segments look quite different from the others. These segments are modified as light-producing organs. Firefly larvae live in moist, dark places – in the soil, under tree bark, and even in swampy areas. Like their adult counterparts, larvae glow. In fact, fireflies produce light in all stages of their life cycles. Classification: Kingdom – AnimaliaPhylum - ArthropodaClass – InsectaOrder – ColeopteraFamily – Lampyridae Diet: Most adult fireflies do not feed at all. Firefly larvae live in the soil, preying on snails, grubs, cutworms, and other soil-dwellers. They inject their prey with digestive enzymes that paralyze and break down the bodies, and then consume the liquefied remains. Some fireflies eat mites or even pollen. Life Cycle: Fireflies typically lay their eggs in damp soil. Eggs hatch within weeks, and larvae overwinter. Fireflies may remain in the larval stage for several years before pupating in the spring. In ten days to a few weeks, adults emerge from the pupal cases. Adults live just long enough to reproduce. Special Adaptations and Defenses: Fireflies are best known for their coolest adaptation – they produce light. Male fireflies flash their abdomens in species-specific patterns, hoping to attract the attention of a female hiding in the grass. An interested female will return the pattern, helping guide the male to her in the darkness. Some females use this behavior for more sinister means. A female of one species will purposefully mimic the flash patterns of another species, luring a male of another kind to her. When he arrives, she eats him. Male fireflies are rich with defensive chemicals, which she consumes and uses to protect her eggs. Most females dont practice cannibalism, though. In fact, since females live just a few days spent waiting in the grass for a mate, some dont even bother to develop wings. Firefly females may look just like larvae, but with compound eyes. Many fireflies use foul-tasting defensive compounds to deter predators, like jumping spiders or even birds. These steroids, called lucibufagins, cause the predator to vomit, an experience it wont soon forget when it next encounters a firefly. Range and Distribution: Fireflies live in both temperate and tropical climates throughout the world. About 2,000 species of Lampyrids are known globally.

How Consumer Insight Are Shaping Companies in India Essay Example for Free

How Consumer Insight Are Shaping Companies in India Essay Customer is King is an adage that most companies across the globe have embraced. The need to concentrate on customers and be responsive to their demands has long been acknowledged by organizations. However, with globalisation and technological revolution the dynamics of business, the meaning of customer and market knowledge have all undergone a transformation. Today, the customer is the controlling factor in business and to be market-driven, an organisation has to evolve a culture that constantly listens to the customer, analyses competition and has strategies that meet existing, anticipated and even unanticipated needs of the customer. Going one step further, organizations must focus on customer relationship management which has given way to customer knowledge management. Given the international environment and knowledge economy, market and customer intelligence serves as a core competency and a principal source of competitive advantage. Leading by listening Practically every success story in today’s corporate realm reflects how awareness of customer needs shapes competitive business strategy. Let’s look at some examples. Procter Gamble When PG, the largest consumer goods company in the world, chose to offer its products to the lower income customer in developing countries, it had research teams associating with the poorest of homes for weeks. This gave the company valuable insights, which aided the company in creating a range of products that suited the pockets of this segment, enabling it to gain substantial market share. Amazon.com Amazon.com, the first e-retailer of books in the world, attained competitive advantage by emerging as book lovers’ forum where they could also share knowledge. It maintains customer knowledge through services such as book reviews, access to order histories and product recommendations based on preceding orders. Consequently, Amazon has recorded more than 70% repeat orders from its customers. Mahindra Mahindra Mahindra Mahindra’s SUV, Scorpio, has experienced enormous success in domestic and international markets. The positioning of Scorpio as an economy SUV was centered on the findings of extensive market visits and exploration of customer needs. The customer needs and wants ascertained were transformed into product specifications for Scorpio. Customer groups were consulted at every stage of design and product development. Scorpio was designated as the â€Å"Car of the Year† by ‘BBC on Wheels’ shortly after its launch. Indian Railways The amazing transformation of Indian Railways from what was termed as a white elephant to a profit making entity in less than two years has caught the attention of Indian and foreign academic and corporate establishments. This turnaround was not owing to any high-end technology but to a modest information means — the passenger feedback form. Data attained from these forms was analysed to identify customer expectations from the Railways. This was supported by a study of the best railways worldwide, and benchmarking with other transportations such as roadways and airlines. The outcome was a complete renovation of trains, stations and railway services to render them passenger-friendly. Needless to say, customers welcomed this change. The above examples highlight that it is vital to listen to customers for a success marketer-customer relationship, where the customer is not just a beneficiary, but a partner. Effective listening, together with strategic initiatives, can bring about a happily-ever-after end to this association.

Ernest Hemingway :: essays research papers

Hemingway Essay   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  A good writer’s objective is to say as much as possible as briefly as possible. This enables the thinking about the implications of the word’s presented. Ernest Hemingway explained this idea in his “iceberg'; theory of writing fiction in an interview for Paris Review: “ If it is any use to know it, I always try to write on the principle of the iceberg. There are seven-eighths of it under water for every part that shows.'; In order to expand on the meaning of his plots and characters, Hemingway used symbols and extended meanings to supply the unstated and submerged portion of his stories. The story “ Hills Like White Elephants'; is an excellent example of Hemingway’s “iceberg'; principal with its extensive use of literary symbols.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In Hemingway’s “iceberg'; theory of writing, Hemingway wants readers to “read in-between lines'; and derive the true meaning of the story. To do this, you must interpret the symbolism Hemingway uses.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The story “Hills Like White Elephants'; is about a man and a woman who are at a train station in Madrid, Spain. The woman is pregnant and the man and the woman are discussing whether the woman should have an abortion operation. They have only forty minutes (the time they have to wait for their train to arrive) to make their decision. At the end of the story, the woman is still not certain if she should have the abortion operation.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In “Hills Like White Elephants';, there are many examples of the “iceberg'; theory. One strong example was when the woman, referring to the hills, says,“ They look like white elephants.'; The woman later says, in response to the man’s request of trying to have a fine time,“ All right. I was trying. I said the mountains looked like white elephants. Wasn’t that bright?'; The white elephants in these two statements symbolize the woman’s mythical dreams. The white elephants were just a figment of her imagination. The background and the horizon of the hills represent all the remote possibilities for the resolution of their current problem. Another example of Hemingway’s iceberg theory in the story “Hills Like White Elephants'; is the two sides of the valley; “ The hills across the valley of the Ebro were long and white. On this side there was no shade and no trees and the station was between two lines of rails in the sun.'; The detailed symbolism of the two sides of the valley represent the two characters, the man and the woman.

Jose Rizal’s Family

Jose Rizal's parents, Francisco Mercado Rizal y Alejandro (1818–1898)[8] and Teodora Alonzo y Quintos(1826–1911),[8] were prosperous farmers who were granted lease of a hacienda and an accompanying rice farm by the Dominicans. Rizal was the seventh child of their eleven children namely: Saturnina (1850–1913), Paciano (1851–1930), Narcisa (1852–1939), Olympia (1855–1887), Lucia (1857–1919), Maria (1859–1945), Jose Protasio (1861–1896), Concepcion (1862–1865), Josefa (1865–1945), Trinidad (1868–1951) and Soledad (1870–1929). Rizal was a 9th-generation patrilineal descendant of Domingo Lam-co (Chinese: pinyin: Ke Yinan), a Chinese immigrant entrepreneur who sailed to the Philippines from Jinjiang, Quanzhou in the mid-17th century. [9] Lam-co married Inez de la Rosa, a Sangley native of Luzon. To free his descendants from the Sinophobic animosity of the Spanish authorities, Lam-co changed the surn ame to the Spanish â€Å"Mercado† (market) to indicate their Chinese merchant roots. In 1849, Governor-General Narciso Claveria ordered all native families in the Philippines to choose new surnames from a list of Spanish family names. Jose's father Francisco[8] adopted the surname â€Å"Rizal† (originally Ricial, the green of young growth or green fields), which was suggested to him by a provincial governor, or as Jose had described him, â€Å"a friend of the family†. However, the name change caused confusion in the business affairs of Francisco, most of which were begun under the old name. After a few years, he settled on the name â€Å"Rizal Mercado† as a compromise, but usually just used the original surname â€Å"Mercado†. Upon enrolling at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila, Jose dropped the last three names that make up his full name, at the advice of his brother, Paciano Rizal Mercado, and the Rizal Mercado family, thus rendering his name as â€Å"Jose Protasio Rizal†. Of this, Rizal writes: â€Å"My family never paid much attention [to our second surname Rizal], but now I had to use it, thus giving me the appearance of an illegitimate child! â€Å"[10] This was to enable him to travel freely and disassociate him from his brother, who had gained notoriety with his earlier links with native priests who were sentenced to death as subversives. From early childhood, Jose and Paciano were already advancing unheard-of political ideas of freedom and individual rights which infuriated the authorities. [11][12] Despite the name change, Jose, as â€Å"Rizal† soon distinguishes himself in poetry writing contests, impressing his professors with his facility with Castilian and other foreign languages, and later, in writing essays that are critical of the Spanish historical accounts of the pre-colonial Philippine societies. Indeed, by 1891, the year he finished his sunset, this second surname had become so well known that, as he writes to another friend, â€Å"All my family now carry the name Rizal instead of Mercado because the name Rizal means persecution! Good! I too want to join them and be worthy of this family name†¦ â€Å"[10] Jose became the focal point by which the family became known, at least from the point of view of colonial authorities.
